Mohamed A. Hared is serving a 10½-year prison sentence for killing a coworker during an argument over a missing flashlight. The 26-year-old Amazon Fulfillment Center employee in Minnesota pleaded guilty to second-degree murder without intent in the death of Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, according to a court document. Hared received credit for 700 days already served before his sentencing.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on June 29, 2024, at an Amazon facility in Dakota County. Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting in the parking lot. Cariif was found dead between two cars, while Hared stood nearby with a gun in his hand. A third coworker, identified as Witness 1, had also called 911 and remained inside the building until officers arrived.
Authorities confirmed that Hared, Cariif, and Witness 1 carpooled to work. Hared told police he brought a firearm to work but left it in the witness’s car. During a break at 1 a.m., he discovered the gun was still there but claimed a flashlight attachment was missing. He accused Cariif and the witness of stealing it, both of whom denied the allegation.
The trio agreed to search for the flashlight during another break at 4 a.m. Hared said he placed the gun in his waistband while looking. He later claimed Cariif became aggressive when asked to return the flashlight, leading to a physical altercation. Hared said he fired the gun in self-defense after Cariif allegedly tried to grab it.
However, testimony from Witness 1 and security footage contradicted Hared’s account. The witness said Hared refused to call security to review surveillance footage and instead yelled, “No one’s going home tonight.” A brief fight broke out, which Witness 1 interrupted. Moments later, Hared pulled out his gun, and Cariif yelled, “Don’t shoot me.”
Footage showed Hared threw the first punch in the initial altercation. He did not attempt to retreat despite multiple opportunities. At 4:09 a.m., Cariif was shot and fell to the ground. An autopsy confirmed the bullet struck his chest, piercing his heart, lung, and aorta.
