A Texas man, Nicholas Wells, has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting another man, Christopher Brandon Steven, at a Walgreens store in El Paso. Wells, 26, claimed he was trying to calm the situation when he shot Steven, but police say surveillance video tells a different story.
The dispute began when Steven’s mother pulled into an accessible parking spot next to Wells’ vehicle, where he was parked as an Uber driver. Wells yelled at the family, asking them why they were parking next to him, and Steven’s mother pulled out of the spot and parked elsewhere.
According to an arrest affidavit, Wells followed Steven’s family into the store, yelling at Steven in an aggressive manner. Steven turned around and chest-bumped Wells, who allegedly punched Steven in the face.
The fight escalated, with both men fighting for control of a handgun that Wells had pulled out. Wells put his arm around Steven’s neck before aiming the gun at Steven’s head. After a struggle, Wells fired one shot into Steven’s abdomen, causing him to collapse.
Wells then fired two more shots at Steven while he was on the ground. Police were already at the scene and placed Wells in custody.
While detained, Wells claimed that Steven had assaulted him for no reason and he had to shoot him. However, surveillance video showed that Wells threw the first punch and that Steven’s mother was not driving erratically when she parked her car.
